Preventing Periodontitis

Posted .

Periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease, is a serious issue in this country. In fact, it is one of the most common health problems today, affecting nearly 47% of Americans over 30. That’s almost 65 million people. With so many people suffering from periodontitis, it’s important to know what the warning signs are, and more importantly, how you can prevent it in the first place.

Here are some common signs of periodontitis:
– Swollen, red, purplish gums
– Gums pulling away from your teeth
– Spaces developing between your teeth
– Pus between teeth and gums
– Bad breath
– A bad taste in your mouth
– Loose teeth
– A change in your bite

While some of these doubtless seem serious, early gum disease is not marked by pain, so many people do not think anything is wrong when these symptoms start to manifest themselves. But they are reversible if addressed early.

The best treatment, of course, is prevention, and gum disease is totally preventable. Since it is caused by built-up plaque and tartar, removing these substances eliminates the threat. Carefully brush your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time, and also floss. Flossing gets into the tight spaces between teeth where bacteria most commonly accumulate. Using an antimicrobial mouth rinse also helps.
