Removing Something from Between your Teeth or Gums

Posted .

Having something stuck between your teeth or along the gum line can be uncomfortable and cause anxiety. Some of the most common objects include popcorn hulls, meat fibers, seeds and fruit peels. Bad habits like chewing on pens and pencils and other hard objects can also break small pieces off that become lodged uncomfortably.

It’s important to stay calm if something does happen to get stuck. You should never use toothpicks or other sharp pointed tools to try to pry the object loose. It could damage the enamel or potentially injure your gums.

The first tool of choice should be a spool of waxed dental floss. The waxy coating helps it slide between teeth and work around the foreign object. Be careful when slipping the floss between your teeth or around the object. Avoid snapping it into place, as this can easily injure your gums.

If the object still doesn’t come free you can try to rinse the area with a water jet or dental fountain. Sometimes the vigorous stream of water can loosen debris.
